For most of us today, printing a document is as simple as tapping a button, but this was not always the case. Historian and printer, Dr Dawn Hollis will trace the history of letterpress printing from Gutenberg’s Bible through to its ‘death’ in the mid-twentieth century and its afterlife in the hands of twenty-first century craftspeople.
Dawn will discuss the responsibility of using and caring for historic equipment and will offer a glimpse of what it is like to live life through the eyes of a printer – from the frustration of noticing poor design work to the pleasure of being awake to the typographical richness of the local environment.
After the talk attendees will have the opportunity to print a keepsake on one of her more portable printing presses.

Join us for an evening Bat Walk with Sasha Newar from the University of St Andrews BatLab. We will head out from Dreel Halls with torches and bat detectors, making our way along the Dreelside footpath to explore the night-time world of bats and discover which species live right here in our area.
Sasha will help us listen for and identify the bats we encounter – so come along, learn something new and experience our local wildlife after dark!
Meet at 6pm at Dreel Halls, the bat walk will start at 6.30pm.
Bat detectors will be provided, please bring a torch
We will reconvene at Dreel Halls afterwards for hot drinks.

Robert Brodie set up his blacksmith’s forge in Anstruther in the early 1860s. His son, Robert Jnr, and later grandson, David, made the name Brodie synonymous with one of most famous hand-forged cleek foundries in the world, alongside Anderson of Anstruther. Whilst Robert Jnr later became Provost of Anstruther Wester, other members of the family gained notoriety, which for some ultimately ended in tragedy.
This talk by Kevin Dunion, author, historian and Chair of the Kilrenny and Anstruther Burgh Collection, which holds Brodie and Anderson clubs, follows the fortunes of the Brodie family, intertwined with their role in the development of golf in Anstruther.

The East Neuk Knits Festival kicks off with a social event at Dreel Halls on the evening of Thursday 27th November.
This will be a gentle knit night with a difference: inspired by the kvöldvaka tradition of knitting or mending as we listen to stories on a winter’s evening, East Neuk Knits will be showing two special films.
First up will be a short film, originally produced for the Venice Biennale, featuring Di Gilpin. The film is about making, whale song, memory and remembrance. This will be followed by a screening of Trad Treasures, a film about the life and work of Jimmy Hutchison, weaver and Gaelic singer. Jimmy, who will also feature in the Festival as the Handloom Weaver in the marketplace on Friday and Saturday, will introduce the film (and singing) on Thursday evening.
The AIA will provide hot drinks and cakes (by donation) and a warm welcome, with plenty of time to craft together and talk.
